Different types of Hyaluronic acids can be used in skincare formulas, and some HA serums or face creams have different molecular weights in their composition.
The molecule sizes of different Hyaluronic acids can vary from low to high (it can range from 5,000 to 20,000,000 Daltons, the unified atomic mass unit). The size of the molecule matters because they will play different roles in the skincare formulas: smaller Hyaluronic acid molecules (with a low molecular weight) can penetrate deeper into the skin’s layer, and bigger molecules sit closer to the skin’s surface.
- High molecular weights of HA work specifically on the surface & upper layers of the skin preventing dehydration and giving skin a powerful infusion of moisture so it feels hydrated and looks healthier.
- Medium molecular weights of Hyaluronic acid work on filling, plumping fine lines
and wrinkles and smoothing the skin with a deeper action in the epidermis. - Low molecular weights of HA penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and work on delivering a more intense, multi-level hydrating action whilst restructuring the skin and improving the overall texture and appearance.
